Why Pilates?
Pilates is a body-conditioning programme designed to teach efficient movement and provide general well-being using controlled exercises and deliberate breathing patterns. Regular practice will provide you with a strong core, good alignment and functional mobility whilst providing a unique approach to body awareness, posture and stability.
Is Pilates suitable for you?
Pilates exercises are low impact and non-aerobic so are ideal for all levels of fitness: from the injured and sedentary to fit people wanting further improvements. Age, gender and level of fitness are no barrier... you just need to be able to lie on the floor (assistance given upon request).
As both a rehabilitation and wellness program Pilates is a wonderful complement to chiropractic, massage therapy and many other therapeutic and physical fitness systems.
What will Pilates do for me?
Pilates increases the strength of stabiliser muscles that may not commonly be worked out in a standard exercise or sport. It strengthens your core like no other exercise and it’s these core muscles that keep your back healthy.
Pilates practice reduces future injuries as it helps to condition the whole body, not just certain muscles. This helps balance the muscle and strength of the body. Since, during Pilates, no set of muscles is ever over or under trained, there is less risk for injury. The body becomes more fluid and supple so protecting against injury.
The pelvic and spinal stabilisation work helps prepare the body for rehabilation of other weak or damaged areas more effective. In particular Pilates is used to rehabilitate spine problems where it strengthens, lengthens, and balances spinal musculature, thereby aligning and decompressing injured vertebrae and helping to relieve nerve and disc pressure. This decompression facilitates and stimulates healthy circulation to the damaged spinal tissue.
Pilates helps you become efficient with your body - being efficient means that your body moves in a way that is smoother, safer and less prone to injury.
Pilates is a Mind-Body Workout - The smooth, precise and flowing movements are designed to make you more mindful of your body. Breath is emphasised to put you in touch with how your muscles use breathing. Pilates has been demonstrated to reduce stress, anxiety and helps lift your mood.
